What are the different parts of Medicare?

Part A

Medicare Part A is the basic Medicare coverage that any person who qualifies for social security is entitled to. This insurance coverage helps pay for hospital bills, skilled nursing home stays, hospice services, and some home health care services.

Part B

Medicare Part B is an optional benefit that helps cover outpatient medical needs including doctor visits, laboratory tests, ambulance services, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services like flu shots.

Part C

Medicare Part C is an alternative to traditional Medicare coverage. Part C combines Parts A, B and sometimes D. Private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare provide this insurance option. These plans are also called Medicare Advantage Plans. The private insurance company will issue their own card, to be used instead of the red white and blue card.

Part D

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. This is an optional benefit that helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare provide this insurance option. The private insurance company will issue their own card, to be used at the pharmacy for covered prescription medications. Recipients will still use their red white and blue card for other healthcare needs that are covered through Medicare parts A and B. Typically Part D insurance is purchased, and the additional amount will be taken from your Social Security check.
