Are You at Risk for Developing Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone. An estimated 10 million Americans have osteoporosis. Over 34 million Americans have low bone mass. Low bone mass is a sign that osteoporosis is developing. People with osteoporosis are at increased risk for bone fracture especially in the wrist, hip, and spine.

Risk factors: Some risk factors for developing osteoporosis include

  • Age 50 and older
  • Females
  • Low estrogen levels
  • Family history of low bone mass
  • Caucasian or Asian race
  • Low body weight (less than 125 lbs.)
  • Long-term steroid use such as prednisone
  • Excessive caffeine consumption
  • Low calcium diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Cigarette smoking

Prevention:

Some of the risks for osteoporosis are preventable. Simply eating a high calcium diet and avoiding caffeine and smoking can help prevent the disease. Regular exercise is also very important in preventing osteoporosis, as well as improving the likelihood of speedy recovery if the disease develops.

Who should be tested?

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that does not produce symptoms until fractures develop. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines, the following individuals should place high priority on getting tested:

  • All post menopausal women under the age of 65 who have risk factors for osteoporosis
  • All women aged 65 and older
  • Those with a family history of low bone mass (including males)

Bone density screening is quick and painless. Just by placing your heel in a machine, a pharmacist can calculate your bone density to determine if you may have osteoporosis or are at risk for developing the disease.
