History

Richmond Apothecaries began as a single store pharmacy operation in St. Mary's Medical Building. Operating as "Bremo Pharmacy," the pharmacy opened June 17, 1976 by the founder of the company, Daniel Herbert, RPh.

We have always emphasized difficult-to-find services and products. Bremo Pharmacy became a Diabetic Teaching Center and the first area supplier of blood glucose monitors in the 1980s. The pharmacy was also licensed as a fitting center for custom and prescription gradient compression garments. In 1982, Bremo became a professional compounding center.

R. Keith Kittinger who joined the company in 1982, worked to establish the operation of Metropolitan Pharmacy. In June 1983, Metropolitan Pharmacy was opened and began operation in downtown Richmond. In early 1984, Metropolitan began its move into the adult home market with the establishment of a new service designed specifically for adult homes. Mr. Kittinger has been responsible for the steady growth and expansion of that service and today operates one of the larger services of its kind in the state.

In 1985, Bremo Pharmacy continued to expand by assuming management responsibility for Henrico Professional Pharmacy. This pharmacy had been previously owned and managed by Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

In 1986 Richmond Apothecaries, Inc was formed. The newly formed company operated all pharmacies, Bremo Pharmacy, Henrico Pharmacy, and Metropolitan Pharmacy.

In 2002, Metropolitan Pharmacy was relocated to the same shopping center where Bremo Pharmacy is located. All services for long-term care facilities were moved into the single location and now operate out of the new space as well as our present office staff. The combined long-term care pharmacy is now called Bremo LTC.

Recognizing that information is a valuable part of pharmacy services, Richmond Apothecaries has increased emphasis on consulting activities and continues to plan and market information services. In 1992, our Medication Management Division was added in an effort to provide the required information needed for long-term care facilities to properly administer medications. Since that time we have also added a pharmacy technician training class and a diabetes education class to further our efforts to promote information services as an added value to our product.

In 2004, after a brief illness, we lost our founder and CEO, Dan Herbert. As was typical of Dan, he was serving his profession up until the end operating as president of the American Pharmacists Association at the time of his passing.  Dan left a rich legacy in pharmacy and in our company. Richmond Apothecaries has always been a family in a real and conceptual way. It was important to Dan and to the management team that the company continue its same direction with the philosophy set forth by its founder. His motto of “Service Beyond Comparison” continues to be our creed.
