This course meets Virginia requirements for necessary training of a non-licensed person to administer medications in an assisted living facility according to the Code of Virginia §54.1-3408. Our state certified trainers offer a 68-hour course comprised of 48-hours of classroom/lecture, 20-hours of supervised skills session and a final written exam. We follow the approved Virginia Board of Nursing curriculum in Medication Management. Our approved program number is 0030000052.

students will learn, through both didactic and practical demonstration, proper medication administration and record keeping. The “hands on” practice assignments prepare students for real world application. Our workbook also provides helpful detail, illustrations, and |

|
| practice examples for each of the task areas. Attendance at days 1-6 is required before a student may attend the practicum section of the course. |
|
|
|
|
| Medication Management 20-hour Supervised Skills Session (practicum): The supervised skills session or practicum section of the course will be completed at Imperial Plaza Assisted Living Facility under the direction of Angela Sims, LPN. The practicum section of the course is limited to 5 students at a time. Students will spend 20 hours (over the course of several days) practicing skills taught during the classroom/lecture portion of the course. The skills competency for the demonstration tasks will be completed during this training and a pass/fail status will be granted by Angela Sims, LPN. |
| Final written exam (by appointment): After successful completion of the supervised skills section, the participant will then schedule an appointment with Richmond Apothecaries to take a written final exam. Students who do not pass all areas may schedule make up skills demonstrations for focused task areas up to three times. Those who do not pass on their fourth attempt will be required to repeat the entire 68-hour course. |
| Upon successful completion of both sections of the course (classroom and practical) the student will be issued a certificate of completion from our program. With this certificate, the student can submit an application to the Virginia Board of Nursing to register for the computerized state competency exam. Students must pass with test with 80% accuracy and pay the required fees to be registered as a medication aide through the Virginia Board of Nursing. |
Individual Enrollment Fee:
68-hour course: > $450
Includes attendance at Days 1-6 of classroom/lecture, 20 hours of supervised skills, final competency exam, and one study guide. This fee is non-refundable after attendance at Day 1 of the 68-hour course.
Sponsored Enrollment Fee: >>>>>> ............... $ 90
Assisted living facilities that utilize Bremo LTC Pharmacy for their clients’ prescription needs may register their staff members through sponsored enrollment. This course will be made available for medication aides who were certified prior to July 1, 2007 and meet all of the following requirements.
1. Present proper photo identification
2. Provide documentation of successful completion of a staff-training program in direct client care approved by the Department of Social Services OR show current CNA license.
3. Provide documentation of successful completion of 32-hour course AND proof of registration with the Virginia Geriatric Education Center (VGEC). Medication aides must be in the VGEC database for licensed Assisted Living Facilities prior to July 1, 2007. If a medication aide never registered with VGEC he/she will be required to enroll in the 68-hour course.
4. Sign waiver to confirm employment at an assisted living facility as a medication aide for at least one year. The one-year of experience working as a medication aide shall be immediately prior to applying for registration.
5. Successfully complete an exam (offered as part of the refresher course) on all tasks previously taught in the 32-hour course. All of these tasks will also be included on the state competency exam but will not be covered in the refresher course of new material. It is assumed that as a practicing medication aide you have mastered these tasks.
|
| Please be advised that this New Curriculum Refresher Course will only cover the new material that was added to the 68-hour course. In order for success in this course current medication aides must have a grasp of all tasks previously learned in the 32-hour course. After successful completion of the New Curriculum Refresher Course each medication aide will still be required to submit an application to the Virginia Board of Nursing to be allowed to sit for the computerized state competency test. Medication aides must pass the state competency exam with 80% accuracy and pay the required fees to be registered with the Virginia Board of Nursing as a medication aide. |
| Our certified trainers take great pride in educating future medication aides. If we feel that a current medication aide needs additional help with tasks previously taught in the 32-hour course we will recommend that he/she take the 68-hour course rather than the New Curriculum Refresher Course. We will issue a pre-course exam to determine prior knowledge before the start of the New Curriculum Refresher Course. Our ultimate goal is for our students to obtain an 80% pass rate on the state competency exam and we will help direct students so that they can achieve this goal. |
Individual Enrollment Fee:
New curriculum refresher course: > $100
Includes attendance at 2-day course and study guide. This fee is non-refundable after attendance at Day 1 of the New Curriculum Refresher Course.
Sponsored Enrollment Fee: >>>>>> ............... $ 20
The enrollment fee is charge upon attendance at Day 1 and is non-refundable.
